Pirated IP: Role Play Exercise on Computer Ethics

Thou shalt not use other people’s computer resources without authorization.

(Script Outline)

It is almost semestral break and the students are trying to beat deadlines for their projects. The problem is that they do not know what to do and the deadline for their project is due the following day. The situation is how the students deal to the problem without thinking of the consequence. Piracy of a computer program is involved and dishonesty of the students in not admitting the crime they have done.

Student 1: Hey, have you done the program for our project in…?
Student 2: Not yet. Why?
Student 1: It will be due tomorrow.
Student 3: Oh my! How could I finish that? I was just in the middle of nowhere of the program.
Student 4: Me too, I haven’t started yet.

Student 2: What are we going to do?
Student 1: I thought you’re all done.
Student 4: We’re not as smart as you are.

Student 3: Can you help me, please?
Student 2: Me too!
Student 1: Let me think about it.
Student 4: Think about it?

Student 3: There’s no more time for that.
Student 2: Can we have a copy of your program?
Student 3: You’re on the other class so Ma’am will not notice it.
Student 1: But I worked hard for it… I’m really sorry.

Student 4: Guys, guys, don’t worry… We’ll check later on the lab if someone left his program in one of the pcs.
Student 2: Yeah yeah…. Haha, you are so clever.

Student 4: We’ll spread out so that well not get noticed.

Student 3: Have you found one?
Student 2,3: Nope,
Student 4: Me neither, 4 how about you?
Student 2: Well, I did found one and guess who’s work is it?
Student 4: Who?
Student 2: It’s …. work!
Student 3: Awesome!
Student 4: We’ll just change some variables so that Ma’am will not notice it.

Student 2: Whew!

Teacher 1: Good morning class…
Students: Good morning Ma’am.

Teacher 1: Have your project ready and kindly submit them in front.
Students: Okay Ma’am.

Teacher 1: Any questions?
Students: None Ma’am.
Teacher 1: Then you can go. After a week, check the bulletin board for updates.

Student 4: Whew. I thought we’d never made it.
Student 2: I have to go home now…
Student 3: See you next week!
Student 4: Bye!

Teacher 2: Still working huh?
Teacher 1: Yeah, I have to check on the programs my students made for the project I gave them.
Teacher 2: What about?
Teacher 1: Just a simple program based on their interests.
Teacher 2: Okay. Can I take a look?
Teacher 1: Okay..
Teacher 2: Wait a minute Hmmmm… I think this program is the same from the first one.
Teacher 1: Let me check.
Teacher 2: It seems that some variables were changed but the structure is the same.
Teacher 1: What kind of student this is.
Teacher 2: What? Another one?
Teacher 1: That’s 3 projects with the same program.
Teacher 2: I think they just copied it from someone without permission.
Teacher 1: We have to find out who did the original program.
Teacher 1: Let me see….
Teacher 2: Do you have any other class beside this class?
Teacher 1: Oh, yes.
Teacher 1: Wait, I’ll check.
Teacher 2: It seems that…. Look.

Teacher 2: Hmmm, this is the original one.
Teacher 1: You’re right.
Teacher 2: These copies have a few errors.

Teacher 1: I have to call the attention of these students.

One week…

Oh no, you think mam noticed it?
I guess, we’ll have to find out.

Whatever happens, don’t admit it.

I called your attention because of the program you made.
I have noticed that you just copied it from….

What? I never shared my program Ma’am. Honest.

Can you tell me where you got the program? You know I can fail you for what you did.

I’m sorry Ma’am …. I just found it on the lab and thought that I can use it. Please give me another chance. I will do everything I can. I promise to make a better program than this, or else, fail me for good.

Very well, its easy to be said than done. I will give you a week for you to prove it.

I find this subject difficult Ma’am. and I prefer to be dropped.

If that’s what you want…

Oh no, I never copied someone else’s work. I was just in rush and researched online, maybe that’s why it looks the same. I’ll just make another program .

This is settled then. I hope you all learned your lesson. .. and…. I’ll be here waiting for your work.

Okay Ma’am. Thanks Ma’am. Again, we are so sorry.

….

Why did you admit it?
I got nervous.

Me too.
This subject bores me.
Are you really making a new program?
Yes, I will try my best.

One week…

How about you?
I’ ll ask those who are ahead of us if they had made that kind of program?
And you will copy it again?

Yeah, I’m sure shell not know?’
Be careful.
Okay.

Hello.
Hi Ma’am.
So now you’ve done it right.
Yes Ma’am.
… I will look on this and will let you know soon.

This one is the best program ever made.
I’ll will him pass then.
But this one, seems familiar.
It looks like ..
I think I had my students made this program last year.
Yes, this was the one.
You have to fail him.
Of course, he was such a liar.
He doesn’t deserve it.
